Last year, downtown San Rafael packed its holiday kickoff into one evening. Winter Wonderland ran from 5 to 7 p.m. on Saturday, November 29, 2025, at City Plaza. It fell on Shop Small Saturday, and the event page told people to spend the afternoon in downtown shops and hunting for elves in storefront windows before heading to the plaza for the tree lighting.
This year the 45th Winter Wonderland is on Saturday, December 5, 2026, from 1 to 6 p.m. It moves out of the plaza and onto Fourth Street between A Street and Lootens. The event runs three hours longer, starts in daylight, and falls a week after Thanksgiving weekend instead of on it. The next evening brings the Giant Menorah Lighting & Gelt Drop to Downtown San Rafael Plaza. Together they make the first weekend of December downtown's main holiday weekend this year. Everything else on the calendar between now and then leads up to it.
What actually changed on December 5
The date moved by a week, and the format changed along with it. Here is how the two years compare, based on the City's 2025 and 2026 event pages:
- Date: Saturday, November 29, 2025, the Saturday after Thanksgiving. This year it is Saturday, December 5, 2026. Thanksgiving weekend's Saturday falls on November 28 this year, and Winter Wonderland is no longer on it.
- Hours: 5 to 7 p.m. last year. 1 to 6 p.m. this year.
- Footprint: Last year it centered on City Plaza. This year it fills Fourth Street from A Street to Lootens.
- Producer: For the anniversary, the City of San Rafael's Recreation team is producing the event in partnership with the Downtown Business Improvement District.
The event site lists train rides, live music, visits with Santa, kids' entertainers, inflatables and a tree lighting, all free. The program is longer than what fit into two hours at the plaza, and moving it onto the street gives it room.
In its October 2 announcement, the City described what it hopes the anniversary year will do:
"We aim to bring new ideas, activities, and energy to preserve and strengthen this longtime community tradition."
That line comes from the City of San Rafael's announcement. On the calendar, Shop Small Saturday and the tree lighting are now on separate weekends.
The street is asking for help filling five hours
A five-hour afternoon on Fourth Street needs more content than a two-hour evening in the plaza. The City is openly recruiting. Its announcement invites residents, community groups, local organizations and businesses to take part, host activities, or sponsor at different levels. The money goes toward activities, entertainment and decorations.
For anyone downtown who runs a club, a studio, a scout troop or a storefront, the Winter Wonderland: Get Involved page is the place to sign up. The sponsorship page lists the business tiers. Because the event is in daylight, families with younger kids can do the whole afternoon and be home before dark. That's a practical difference from a 5 p.m. start in late November.
The Sunday that now pairs with it
The new date puts Winter Wonderland right before an event that was already on the calendar. On Sunday, December 6, from 5 to 6:30 p.m., the Giant Menorah Lighting & Gelt Drop takes over Downtown San Rafael Plaza at 1000 Fourth Street, with music, dancing, treats and a gelt drop by the fire department.
That makes a Saturday afternoon on the Fourth Street blocks between A Street and Lootens, followed by a Sunday evening at the plaza. Last year those two events were eight days apart. This year they're back to back. For anyone who lives within walking distance of Fourth Street, that weekend needs a plan. Book any weekend dinner downtown early, and plan Saturday afternoon errands around an event that fills Fourth Street from A Street to Lootens.
Building toward it, one Friday and Saturday at a time
With Thanksgiving weekend no longer the kickoff, November downtown is a series of smaller dates. Each sits on its own day.
- Saturday, November 7, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Goldenaires Holiday Crafts Market fills the San Rafael Community Center at 618 B Street with handmade crafts and homemade goods. Santa visits from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., and admission is free. It's the first chance to see Santa downtown, almost a month ahead of Winter Wonderland.
- Friday, November 13. Two events overlap. The Second Friday Art Walk brings gallery shows, open studios, installations and receptions across downtown. At 6 p.m., the Downtown Library hosts Local Authors Night, with short author chats and a Marketplace Mixer. Local art and local books on the same evening is an easy way to start gift shopping without leaving the neighborhood.
- Saturday, December 5 and Sunday, December 6. Winter Wonderland, then the menorah lighting.
- Friday, December 11. The year's last Second Friday Art Walk.
The Downtown San Rafael BID's events page also lists a fifth annual Elf Hunt running from November 2026 into January 2027, and a Lighted Boat Parade dated "December TBD." Last year the Elf Hunt was tied to Shop Small Saturday. This year the BID gives it a two-month run instead, which suits a season with several anchor dates rather than one big night. The boat parade was on the San Rafael Canal on December 13, 2025. Watch the BID page for this year's date.
New reasons to linger between events
A longer daytime event works better when there's somewhere to eat on the way. The newest option is at 1574 Fourth Street. Chef Alexander Alioto turned The Kitchen Table, which closed in June, into Alioto's Focacceria, a casual Italian deli open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily, according to the Marin Independent Journal. The menu has focaccia sandwiches, pinsa pizzas, house-made pastas and sauces, salads, Italian pantry goods and wine. Its 10-to-6 hours line up closely with Winter Wonderland's 1-to-6 window. The pantry shelf can also handle a few hostess gifts.
A few blocks away, the Panama Hotel says its restaurant has been open again since September 1, 2026. That gives downtown back a sit-down dinner option in time for the December weekends.
Storefronts and walls that changed this fall
Downtown has also changed visually since late summer. Five new publicly funded artworks were up by the end of August:
- a Third Street mural at the C Street Garage
- a fountain mural and tile artwork at City Plaza
- a retaining-wall mural at Second and Ida
- a sculpture at the B Street Community Center, slated to move to the West End
- a sculpture at City Hall
The City Plaza pieces will be the backdrop on menorah night.
The BID's Vacant to Vibrant program, announced August 31, turns empty storefronts into seasonal art windows. It starts at 1212 Fourth Street, with a second vacant storefront planned. In December, the walk along Fourth Street will pass designed displays where there would otherwise be blank glass.
Planning the first weekend of December
For residents, a few practical points follow from the new schedule. Saturday, November 28 has no Winter Wonderland tree lighting at the end of it this year. Winter Wonderland starts at 1 p.m., which suits families with young kids and people who would rather be home by early evening. Fourth Street between A Street and Lootens will host the event, so expect that stretch to be given over to it on the afternoon of December 5. And if Sunday evening is free, the menorah lighting at 1000 Fourth Street starts at 5 p.m. the next day, a short walk from where Saturday's festivities end.
